2. Test participants’ pre-course intercultural competence.
3. Clarify course objectives and benefits (what’s in it for me).
Module 2: Seeing is Believing? [DISCOVER]
Objectives
1. Develop the ability to take off one’s cultural expectations, to see past one’s “common sense.”
a. Observation, perception, programming, “common sense”
2. Recognize the importance of seeing things in a neutral, descriptive manner in order to understand intended meaning in context.
a. Detect perceptions and learn to see ourselves — and others — more contextually.
b. Be able to distinguish between judgments/conclusions/evaluations and descriptions/facts.
c. CD Model Workspace — words, actions.
d. Develop observation and listening skills on both objective and perceptive levels.
3. Develop critical thinking skills.
Learn to think critically — and interculturally — about what you see and hear.
Module 3: Coming to Your Senses [CONNECT]
Objectives
1. Understand that behavior is motivated by/a manifestation of values.
a. Understand and accept ourselves and others as unique yet culturally influenced individuals and more accurately interpret intentions.
2. Give benefit of the doubt and develop ability to see positive intent.
a. Positive intentions/negative perceptions.
b. CD Model Workspace — “personal cultural sense,” positive intent.
3. Learn to listen with cultural senses, detecting verbal, non-verbal and contextual clues based on cultural influences.
